Energy use was considered throughout the design of Clearview Elementary. Insulated concrete forms, triple-glazed windows, daylighting, and indirect electric lighting will reduce energy demand. Ground-source heat pumps and an underfloor radiant delivery system provide heat. Clearview’s energy performance was modeled using PowerDOE at 23,600 Btu/ft2 (270 MJ/m2) per year, 40% lower than a standard school built to code. Building materials were selected on the basis of their recycled content and/or recyclability, their renewability, and the environmental impacts of their production processes. The combination of waterless urinals, low-flow faucets and showerheads, and push-button automatic faucet controls are expected to lower Clearview’s potable water use by 30% compared to a conventional new school. A commissioning plan in accordance with LEED requirements will be followed, and the school is teaming with a local university to plan student-led research on post-occupancy performance.
