Sidebar: Know Thy Client: 9 Un-Green Strategies for Delivering Better Buildings

An Unbroken Circle

Hosey and a team at RTKL have developed a tool embodying the connections that they see among core sustainability values. Rather than starting at the strategy level, the DART tool (“DART” doesn’t stand for anything), uses a wheel motif to identify core client values such as first costs, market value, climate, and public health and then provides design strategies based on those values. (See New “DART” Tool Helps Designers Hit the Value Bullseye.)

The strategies are accompanied by ratings that reveal priorities beyond the usual suspects. Energy-efficient envelopes have an impact rating of 6 out of 12, while a connection to the outdoors achieves a 9 out of 12 because it supports values of equity, habitat, and community.

A priority pyramid also shows designers how to implement strategies at a time in the design process that will make them most effective.
