Philips and Novaled Break OLED Efficiency Record
by Jessica Boehland
Royal Philips Electronics and Novaled GmbH have reached a new record in the efficiency of high-brightness, white, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs, or light-emitting polymers). The companies have achieved 25 lumens per watt at a brightness of 1,000 candela per square meter. “This is an encouraging result that clearly demonstrates the potential of OLED technology for lighting applications,” says Klass Vegter, chief technology officer of lamps at Philips. “We are confident that this is not the end of the development and that OLEDs will establish themselves as the second solid-state lighting technology in the market,” following LEDs. OLEDs use thin layers of organic material to generate light when power is supplied. For more on lamp technologies, including solid-state technologies, see
