Window Film: An Overlooked Retrofit Option?

Solar-control window films are a more cost-effective retrofit option in warm climates than air sealing, ceiling insulation, or new HVAC units, an industry study claims.

Energy Analysis for Window Film Applications in New and Existing Homes and Offices, commissioned by the International Window Film Association, a trade group,looks at the savings provided in several California climate zones by a variety of energy-efficiency upgrades for both newer buildings (constructed according to 2008 California energy codes) and older ones (built to 1990 standards). In general, window films were likely to provide the most savings in warmer climates and in buildings with single-pane windows.
