City of Portland Announces BEST Awards

Portland, Oregon’s Office of Sustainable Development has recognized ten local businesses with BEST (

Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow) Awards for efficient use of resources, waste and pollution reduction, and sustainable business practices. The winners with a building-related focus are listed here; a list of all ten winners is online at www.sustainableportland.org.

Gerding/Edlen Development Company, LLC was given the energy award for their work on the Henry, a 15-story residential highrise in the Brewery Blocks renovation that is anticipated to earn a LEED® Gold rating.

Rodda Paint, the largest paint manufacturer in the Northwest, won a sustainable product award. For more information about Rodda’s low-VOC Horizon line, see

Stormwater Management, Inc. was also given a sustainable product award, for its Downspout StormFilter™, which removes heavy metals from rooftop runoff.

Bullseye Glass Company was recognized for water efficiency. Bullseye, which makes glass for art and architecture, cut its water use by 60% in mid-2003 by switching from a single-pass cooling system to one that recirculates water.

Hot Lips Pizza, located in the LEED Gold EcoTrust Building, won a small-business innovation award for implementing companywide sustainable business practices. Hot Lips also won a BEST award in 2002 for being the first Portland restaurant to utilize a heat-recovery system (it captures waste heat from the pizza oven).
