New Baselines from Carbon Leadership Forum

The Carbon Leadership Forum has updated its baseline data to keep pace with industry changes.

The CLF (Carbon Leadership Forum) North American Baseline Report has been updated to provide the most recent embodied carbon data for North American construction materials. Taken from the 2022 Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool, these baseline data come from third-party environmental product declarations (EPDs) and are used by industry professionals to compare the embodied carbon of building products across various sectors.

First published in 2019 and updated in 2021, the latest iteration accounts for the growing number of EPDs, changes in life-cycle assessment (LCA) product category rules (PCRs), and changes in methodologies to improve the data. Because of these changes, the updated baseline values “are not comparable to past reports due to changes in methodology.” The report also includes other information so readers can “better understand the availability of existing industry-wide and product EPDs, and the variability of product types across a category.”

The embodied carbon data in the report are based on cradle-to-gate emissions (A1–A3 in LCAs/EPDs) of North American EPDs only, meaning they do not include transportation, jobsite, use-phase, or disposal impacts. The one exception is for board and foam insulation materials. In this category, other impacts of North American products are also included to account for the global warming potential of blowing agents and other factors.
