CCA-Treated Wood Under Fire
Also in early July, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) took the first step toward a possible ban of CCA-treated wood in playground equipment. The Commission voted to ask for public comment on a petition that was submitted to CPSC on May 22 by the Environmental Working Group and the Healthy Building Network seeking such a ban. The request for public comment on the petition was published in the
Federal Register on July 13, and comments must be received by CPSC by September 11, 2001. CPSC is able to ban products that are deemed unsafe under provisions of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
