Case Study

Cal/EPA Shines in LEED-EB Pilot

The Joe Serna, Jr. California Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters Building in Sacramento was designed and built in 1999, just prior to the release of the LEED Rating System, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency. Since that time, it has been managed with a progressive green focus, so it was positioned to perform well in the LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) pilot program.

Cal/EPA was recognized at Greenbuild as the first Gold-rated project under the LEED-EB pilot program, and building manager Craig Sheehy is hopeful that it may yet achieve a Platinum rating once some additional issues are clarified. (For some interesting tidbits on efforts to green the original design of this project, see pages 179–192 of Greed to Green by David Gottfried, reviewed on page 19.)
