Inflation Reduction Act Pays Nonprofits to Build Green
Hospitals and other nonprofits can now afford long-hoped-for resilience and emission strategies. And the investments are biggest in communities with the least.

The recent Getting to Zero Forum in Minneapolis included both policy- and technology-related strategies on how to make the transition to a net-zero-energy and net-zero-carbon economy. One highlight was a presentation in the technical session “Building Communities That Survive and Thrive,” in which I was also a presenter, about how the Inflation Reduction Act can play a major role in speeding the adoption of renewable energy systems—and net-zero-energy operations—in the hospital sector.
More about climate than inflation
As a reminder, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) was a landmark measure signed into law by President Biden on August 16, 2022. The IRA, a budget reconciliation act, emerged after Democratic Senator Joe Manchin opposed Biden’s Build Back Better Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is credited with keeping much of the original act alive through compromise negotiations with Manchin that ultimately led to his support.
