Correction on Resin Paving

Your highly readable introduction to the Road Oyl emulsion (

EBN

Vol. 8, No. 11, November 1999) shows your reputation for evenhanded reviews is well deserved. I do, however, want to point out a factual error. In reviewing the EPA lab results of runoff for a newly installed Road Oyl pavement, you stated, “Total petroleum hydrocarbon (oil and grease) levels in runoff from newly applied Road Oyl pavement were measured at 2 parts per million (ppm) immediately after installation.” The actual text summary reads “less than 2 parts per million.” This is common verbal shorthand used by laboratory report writers to indicate the “threshold of detection,” not the actual measured quantity. On the following page, the actual measured quantity is indicated as “ND” for not detected—no trace of petroleum hydrocarbon (oil and grease) was detected. We are very proud of the environmentally clean slate of our products.
