Guide to Resource Efficient Building Elements, 6th Edition

by Tracy Mumma (1997). Center for Resourceful Building Technology (CRBT), P.O. Box 100, Missoula, MT 59806; 406/549-7678, www.montana.com/crbt. Paperback, 115 pages, $28 postpaid.

“It’s not often that you would want to sit down and actually read a product directory. But you just might with this.” So began our first review of the

GREBE in 1992, and it’s more true now than it was then. With each edition both the listings and the narrative in the

GREBE have improved, making it a must-have for anyone building environmentally responsible houses.

The

GREBE goes element-by-element through a house, from foundation to roof to interior, listing products that best meet CRBT’s resource-efficiency criteria. Additional sections address job-site recycling, design for resource efficiency, indigenous building technologies, and managing natural resources. There are other directories that list more products, but none matches the

GREBE’s combination of accuracy, detail, and context for the listings.
