ED+C Announces 2006 Excellence in Design Awards

ED+C) magazine has announced the winners of its annual Excellence in Design Awards. This year’s jury included

ED+C staff members as well as Rick Fedrizzi, president and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC); Jim Nicolow, AIA, head of the sustainability initiative at Lord, Aeck & Sargent, Inc.; Robert Prud’homme, Assoc. AIA, owner of Robert B. Prud’homme Design, LLC; Doug Schroeder, associate director of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council; Steven Winter, FAIA, president of Steven Winter Associates, Inc.; and Jerry Yudelson, P.E., associate principal of Interface Engineering, Inc. 111 South Wacker Drive, in Chicago, won the category for commercial, office, industrial, and corporate projects. The 1.5 million ft2 (140,000 m2) office tower, which earned a Gold rating in USGBC’s LEED® for Core and Shell rating system, was developed by the John Buck Company and designed by Lohan Caprile Goettsch Architects (now Goettsch Partners, Inc.).

Cannon Beach Cottage, in Cannon Beach, Oregon, won for single-family homes. Designed by Nathan Good Architect, PC, the 2,300 ft2 (210 m2) home earned a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 94.0 and a Platinum rating in Portland General Electric’s Earth Advantage® program.

• The

David D. Hunting YMCA, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, won for institutional, nonprofit, educational, and healthcare buildings. The 159,000 ft2 (15,000 m2) building was designed by Integrated Architecture.

• The

Dominican Center at Marywood, the spirituality center of the Grand Rapids Dominicans, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, won for multiuse residential projects. This 51-unit residence, offering assisted living and skilled care, was designed by Perkins Eastman.

• The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’

Lewis and Clark State Office Building, in Jefferson City, Missouri, won for government projects. The 120,000 ft2 (11,000 m2) building, which earned a LEED for New Construction Platinum rating, was designed by BNIM Architects.
