Architecture firm EHDD announced on November 12 that it’s established a new company, C.Scale, as an independent public benefit corporation. Jack Rusk, EHDD’s former director of climate strategy, left the firm to become C.Scale’s CEO. And Brad Jacobson, FAIA, principal and partner at EHDD and co-founder of C.Scale, will join the C.Scale team while remaining at EHDD. With this move, the company can bring in investors and ramp up development of its free, AI-driven whole-life carbon tool, also called C.Scale—formerly called the EPIC tool—which launched in 2022.

According to the press release, C.Scale‘s “mission is to enable the full decarbonization of the built environment through democratizing access to climate strategy for designers and owners of all buildings everywhere.”

Using machine learning models based on data from buildings across the world, the C.Scale platform facilitates early modeling “to support climate positive design decisions in early project phases when data is scarce but the potential for emissions reduction is high,” the website explains. (For details of how the tool works, see BuildingGreen’s coverage of its 2022 launch, Free Tool Estimates Embodied and Operational Carbon.)

With its emergence from EHDD, C.Scale continues a trend in which architecture firms incubate and release high-impact sustainable design software tools. For example, Tally, the whole-building life-cycle assessment tool, was developed by KeiranTimberlake and is now owned by the nonprofit Building Transparency.
